[ARCHIVED] Annual Leaf Collection - 12/11/19 UPDATE

leaves

12/11/19 Update:

Leaf collection in Zone #1 has now been completed for the season.  Every street in Zone #1 was visited once following the deadline to have leaves out.  Numerous homes put additional leaves out after we had gone by.  However, we were able to visit every street a second time so that all leaves placed out for collection were removed as of today.

With Zone #1 now completed for the season, we will begin in Zone #2.  For those homes in Zone #2, remember that all leaves MUST be out before Monday, December 16, 2019.  Don't worry if we collect from your street early - we will be back once again beginning December 16th.  However, once we visit your street after December 16th we will be done for the season in Zone 2 as well.  Please click HERE to go to the Public Works - Leaf Collection page to see the daily update of where we have been and when.

One additional reminder - please ensure that sticks, branches and rocks remain out of your leaf piles.  We have four (4) trucks out collecting leaves, but recently we were down to three. While collecting leaves in Zone #1 we found that someone had carelessly swept up landscaping rocks into their leaf pile which was put out for collection.  One of these landscaping rocks was vacuumed up when the leaves were and the impeller of the leaf trailer was destroyed.  The result was a very costly repair to the machine and several days loss of time.  It could have been much worse and someone could have been seriously injured when the rock was sucked into the machine.  Please be careful that ONLY leaves are in your pile.  Ensure that if you have landscapers doing this for you that they understand as well.

Even with the weather not cooperating over the last two weeks, folks putting their leaves out after the deadline and the damage to the equipment we are still on schedule and getting close to having all leaves collected before Christmas.  Thank you to all of those who help by doing your part!

Previous 11/27/19 Update:

Newtown Township's annual leaf collection has now passed the half-way point and continues to go well as we complete our 5th week of work.  Again - THANK YOU to the vast majority of residents who have prepared their leaves on time and in a way we could collect them.  Please click HERE to go to the Public Works - Leaf Collection page to see the daily update of where we have been and when, as well as plenty of additional leaf collection information.

Every street in both Zones 1 and 2 were visited in the time frame that was scheduled.  This Thanksgiving week we cleared additional leaves throughout the Township, including from State Roads where flaggers are necessary, in areas where the sanitary sewer expansion project was about to perform road work and then in as many other areas as we could get to.

Starting on Monday we will be back in Zone #1.  Here again are the dates to have your leaves out and ready to be picked up:

  • Second Collection in Zone #1 - all leaves must be out before Monday, December 2, 2019
  • Second Collection in Zone #2 - all leaves must be out before Monday, December 16, 2019

Check the Public Works leaf collection page for any questions you may have - chances are the answer is there.  If not then send us an e-mail and we will respond to your question as soon as is possible.

Newtown Township's annual leaf collection continues to go well as we enter our 4th week of work.  Again - THANK YOU to the vast majority of residents who have prepared their leaves on time and in a way we could collect them.  Please click HERE to go to the Public Works - Leaf Collection page to see the daily update of where we have been and when, as well as much other information.

This week we are finishing up our first pass through Zone #2.

Public Works is pleased to report that all leaves in Zone #1 that were out by Monday, October 28th were collected.  We were even able to get through many of those streets a second time during that time period.  So far, we are on schedule to have collected from every street in Zone #2 by the end of this week.  If you are in Zone #2 and had your leaves out by Monday, November 11th we expect to clear your street.  HOWEVER, if we went by and your leaves were put out after that, we cannot guarantee that we will get back a second time during this cycle.  We will be back during the second round of collections though.

We have scheduled to collect from each street one time early in the season and one time later in the season.  Have them out on time and we will get them during that window.  Remember to keep sticks, rocks and grass clippings out of your piles or we will need to leave it until it is just leaves.  The machinery cannot collect those other items and can be damaged if we try.  Also, we do not skip piles unless they are blocked by cars, etc.  Watch the daily update to see where we have been.  While we do not embarrass anyone by identifying addresses of problems, we will identify the "block" so you can know why your pile may have been skipped.  Finally, to avoid a visit by the Police or the Code Department, do not block the street with leaf piles!  They must be kept behind the curb so the street is kept clear for travel.  If you have a landscaper doing this for you, make sure they understand.

Please see the posts below for information shared previously as well as checking our Public Works "Leaf Collection" page for the full story.  Thank you again for your working with us and doing your part as we collect all of this material which is put to good use and kept out of the waste stream.

Previous 11/8/19 Update:

Newtown Township's annual leaf collection has gone well for the first two weeks.  THANK YOU to the vast majority of residents who have prepared their leaves on time and in a way we could collect them.  Please click HERE to go to the Public Works - Leaf Collection page to see the daily update of where we have been and when, as well as much other information.

Public Works staff have successfully collected from each street in zone #1 more than once.  Towards the end of this week we began to collect in zone #2 to clear as much as possible before the anticipated poor weather next week.  Staff will be working this Saturday for the same purpose.  Don't worry - just because you see additional collections happening does not mean we will not be back!  We will keep to the schedule as published - there might just be some extra visits when possible.

There are several "annual" issues we have experienced in the first two weeks.  Please make every effort to avoid these when you put your leaves out:

  • Sticks, stones and grass clippings in the leaf piles...don't do it!  We are unable to collect piles with these items in them and we will have to pass your pile by.
  • Cars in front of (or on top of) leaf piles.  If we can't get to your pile we will have to leave it...
  • Missing your time to have the leaves out.  If we pass by after we said we would be there and you didn't have your leaves out yet, we might not be able to get back again.  We often see people raking leaves out AFTER the truck passes by.  Please have them out by the day identified for your zone.
  • Blocking the street with leaf piles.  Don't do it!  It is not safe.  Streets need to be kept clear for travel - leaf piles need to be behind the curb / off of the pavement.

Remember too that we collect leaves from residences on streets dedicated to the Township.  We do not collect leaves from businesses, institutions or from any PRIVATE streets.

Check the Public Works leaf collection page for any questions you may have - chances are the answer is there.  If not then send us an e-mail and we will respond to your question as soon as is possible.

Previous 10/22/19 post:

Newtown Township's annual leaf collection is about to begin.  Please click HERE to go to the Public Works - Leaf Collection page to see a map, dates and important information to help you prepare your leaves for collection.

New this year - and found at the top of the Leaf Collection page - is a chart which lists all of the streets we collect from, when we will begin collecting from them and will tell you where we have been and when!  The report will be updated each evening to let you know where we collected from that day.

Remember that while we collect leaves almost every day for 9 weeks, the schedule only works and is only fair to the rest of the community when you do your part and have your leaves ready when we are in your area:

  • First Collection in Zone #1 - all leaves must be out before Monday, October 28, 2019
  • First Collection in Zone #2 - all leaves must be out before Monday, November 11, 2019
  • Second Collection in Zone #1 - all leaves must be out before Monday, December 2, 2019
  • Second Collection in Zone #2 - all leaves must be out before Monday, December 16, 2019

If you do not have your leaves out on-time, we may have gone by already by the time you do get them out.  Once the date above hits we will work hard to clear everything put out within the two-week window before we go to the next area.

Please read the important information found at the link above.  Thank you for your help and your patience as we collect approximately 10,000 yards of leaves each season. That is a lot of material being kept out of the waste stream!
