Protect Your Packages from Porch Pirates

Safety Tip

In this modern age, more and more consumers are doing their shopping online. As a result, package deliveries to homes has increased exponentially. With that being said, delivery trucks and the packages which are delivered are easy and noticeable targets for thieves. Package delivery safety is important to ensure that your parcels are being safely delivered. In order to keep them out of the hands of thieves, there are few important home security tips.

  1. Always make sure to track your packages. This can be easily accomplished by utilizing the tracking services which are provided by the companies. By doing so, you can monitor in real time the status and locations of your items, which can help you prepare for their delivery. At that point, you can decide to have a family member or friend at your home during delivery. If that is not an option, you can always have a neighbor retrieve the items for you.
  2. You also have the option to provide specific delivery instructions. This is a highly effective way to deter thievery. You can request the carrier to leave the packages at a specific location, such as the back door or with a neighbor. Or the consumer can even opt to have the items delivered to their place of employment rather than home. Some may even decide to require a signature upon receipt. This ensures that the package is handed directly to an authorized person, thus mitigating the risk of theft.
  3. One of the most important and effective security tips would be the installation of home security cameras. A lot of surveillance systems such as NEST and RING are relatively inexpensive, yet highly efficient. The cameras can be installed and/or mounted in specific areas of the home where packages are delivered. Most of these systems are operated from one’s cell phone, where the surveillance is captured in real time. A homeowner does not have to be home to dial 911 in order to report a theft in progress. The owner can provide the specific details over the phone while not being present. This increases the likelihood of the offender being caught. In addition, the sight of a doorbell camera can deter thieves from entering your door area.
  4. Always be mindful of your neighborhood and any suspicious vehicles or vehicles you do not recognize. In a lot of incidents, the thieves will pre-plan their theft and scout the area and homes. If you observe a vehicle which you do not recognize, driving slow in your neighborhood or even idling near a curb, you do have the option of dialing 911 to report it. Neighbors should share information with one another as well. A total neighborhood effort, combined with the other provided security tips, can help prevent you from becoming a victim of a porch pirate.
