The purpose of the revision of the zoning code is designed to implement some of the principle themes, goals and objectives of the Township comprehensive plan, adopted in 2016, in addition to reorganizing the ordinance to allow for improved readability and greater ease of use by the Township, residents, developers and other users. The ordinance as currently constituted is somewhat cumbersome with an excess of individual articles, often requiring time-consuming and sometimes confusing cross-referencing among different articles and provisions.
The Delaware County Planning Department is leading the Township through the zoning rewrite process. The initial phase of public outreach for the rewrite of Newtown's zoning code, initiated by the Newtown Zoning Task Force and Delaware County Planning Department, took place in the months of December 2018 and January 2019. In this time, public comments were collected at a public meeting that included approximately 50 local attendees. As a follow up to the meeting, the Task Force disseminated a survey in an effort to elicit responses from community members who could not attend the meeting. This effort captured responses from another 40+ residents.
The next phase will consist of a public meeting presentation of the Board of Supervisors tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2019 at 7pm. The presentation will be the zoning assessment prepared by the Delaware County Planning Department that will advise the zoning code updates. The assessment has been informed by a public process, review of the existing document, and task force meetings.
