[ARCHIVED] Please Keep Your Recycling Out

Newtown Township Recycling Cart 2

The waste hauling industry has been dealing with issues in timely collection of trash and recycling.  This has recently been reported on in the news as the City of Philadelphia and others work to tackle the problem.

Newtown Township has experienced the same - JP Mascaro & Sons, the company contracted to collect residential recycling in Newtown Township, has been dealing with challenges for the past several months - largely due to staffing issues and the need to bring new staff on who are still learning the routes.  This, and the increase in volume of recyclable collections from homes due to more people staying home due to COVID-19 have created longer collection times.  While their employees start collecting at 7:00am and work until dark, in the past few months they have had increasing difficulty finishing collecting from all homes on their scheduled Thursday, and have needed to finish on Friday mornings.

Please see the attached LETTER from JP Mascaro & Sons discussing the situation.

The key thing to know is this - if it is your recycling day and they have not yet collected your recycling by dark please keep it out - they should be by first thing on Friday morning to finish their route and collect it.

We have tried to be understanding with this situation and ask for your understanding as well.  JP Mascaro & Sons worked extremely hard during the height of the pandemic to keep our collections going and honor their commitment as promised.  Not everyone was as able to do so to that level.  They kept in contact with Public Works and while facing the difficulties we all did managed to keep our residential recycling collections on schedule.  The last few months have been more challenging for them. They are working to get back on track and complete recycling collections in the one day that is scheduled.

Please remember the following information for which we get questions and calls each recycling day:

  • Have your recycling out before 7:00am on your recycling day.  They start at 7:00am, and if you put it out later they might not have missed you - you might have missed them.
  • Even if they "normally" pick up on your street at a certain time, with turnover of staff there could very well be a driver who takes another path - you might now be collected earlier (or) later.  Remember that they have all day to collect.
  • If at the end of the day they still have not been by on your street please keep your recycling out - they will be by early the next morning.
  • Normally reports of "no collection" or service issues should be directed to customer service at J.P. Mascaro & Sons at 800-432-1616. They can address the report more quickly and be in contact with their drivers.  Be sure to identify that you are from Newtown Township in Delaware County. These kinds of concerns should not be reported in the morning - unless you have reason to think they may have missed an area (other than because it was placed out late).  For all other recycling questions you may call or email Newtown Township directly.

Please be sure to check out the Newtown Township Recycling Page to see all of the recycling information, maps and special events we offer you.

Finally, if you are not already signed up, we encourage you to join the NOTIFY ME service on the Newtown Township website.  You can choose what kinds of messages you wish to receive (and please pick "Public Works" as one of your options!).  Public Works always tries to update you whenever there is a recycling issue, schedule change or special event (and in different season to provide leaf collection, snow plowing, etc. updates) - and we do not send unnecessary messages.  Please consider availing yourself of this service.

Thank you for your efforts to recycle, and for your patience and understanding at this time.  We are hopeful the pace of collections will be remedied by our vendor soon.
