11/24/20 UPDATE ON NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP LEAF COLLECTION 2020
Newtown Township is now in its 3rd week of leaf collection, and to date well over 100 truckloads of leaves have been collected. Each day, 4 trucks, 4 Public Works staff and 8 temporary help leaf rakers are collecting leaves throughout the Township. We thank everyone for their patience, understanding and for preparing your leaves as instructed as we continue to collect leaves in light of the challenges posed by COVID-19.
Be sure to check the Newtown Township Leaf Collection page for important information. Each evening a daily update is posted, and there residents can also view the Leaf Collection Dashboard to see an interactive map of the streets we have been on and that we are soon to be visiting.
While we have been able to maintain our published schedule so far, there is one update we wish to share regarding the streets visited the first week of the collection season.
During that first week, we identified that the leaf totals we were collecting were approximately ½ of the totals we collected in previous years. We also witnessed that many leaves had not yet fallen from trees, due to the unusual warm weather that our area experienced in October and the beginning of November. Although we are offering a bagged drop-off for any resident this year, the fact that we estimate approximately ½ of the anticipated totals of leaves in those areas had not yet fallen when we were there caused us to evaluate if we could get back to those areas to collect that balance of leaves which could not be raked at that time.
We are booked solid until shortly before Christmas doing the one collection, as staff need to walk the entire leaf collection route and not ride together in vehicles due to COVID-19 parameters. The only time we can get back to those portions of the community would be after we have been to everyone else whose turn it was. As such, we will go back into the following areas once - beginning Monday, December 14, 2020:
Again, this is not intended to give any portion of the community the benefit of a “second pickup” – it is solely that we believe that the warm weather made it more difficult for the people living in those portions of the community to have their leaves prepared for when we were there. For that reason, Public Works will push even harder and get through those identified areas once more at the end of the season – beginning on December 14th. While we cannot go through all of Newtown Township a second time, we do think going back to “complete” the collection in these sections is the right thing to do due to the weather circumstances.
All residents are reminded to follow the instructions provided on the Leaf Collection webpage, which were also found in the mailing that was sent in late September. Of particular note is the need to keep leaves out of the street. Those property owners who place leaves in the street not only create an unsafe situation, but it specifically is forbidden to do so as stated in chapter 145 of the Newtown Township General Code, and may result in a visit from Newtown Township Code Enforcement or Newtown Township Police.
Newtown Township Public Works again thanks everyone for their patience and understanding as we continue to collect leaves in light of the challenges posed by COVID-19.
